Hello-

I was at the Iola Old Car Show yesterday and picked up some NOS brake shoes with linings that I think may fit my 1958 Chevrolet Viking 2 ton truck, series 60. I only paid $5 for the set, so it is worth a shot. He also has more sets of these shoes, so if I can find out what they fit, I might pick up another set.

My problem is that I do not know what the part number fits for these shoes. It is 3881486 group# 5.017. Can anyone tell me what years or models these shoes fit? The shoes are for a rear axle, as they are 4 inches wide. Thanks!

Jesse,

My 1955 thru 1967 parts book doesn't show any brake parts starting with number 388 until 1966, so what you have is newer than that as it's not in my book.

The correct number for your 1958 Series 60 with a 16000 pound rear axle is Group 5.017...p/n 3730540...exc, Air Brakes...(Wagner # FD-21956)...fits some 56, some 57 and Series 5, 6, 7, 8 & 10F for 58/59.

Hope this helps,

Mike B smile

Hello, I have a 66 chevy c60 dump truck, it has some serious brake problems. Good in other areas, it has been used on a farm for years. The two previous owners, the truck out liveing one of them. Both just used the e-brake after the brakes started to fail. Parts being as I am finding, hard to find a large part of the reason. The flex hoses being blocked, with no fluid going to the wheels. Once the hoses where replaced, the master cylinder was the exit problem. Once that was replaced, pressure on the wheel cylinders caused them to leak. Once they were rebuilt, and found brake shoes and those replaced. Now I find the hydrovac has problems. The brakes can be pumped up, but will not remain pumped up after it sits a bit. I hear vaccum in the cab coming from the vent behind the seat. You can hear the engine change sound, like a vac leak when the brakes are depreesed. So now I assume the hyro is the problem, leaking vac, and the soft pedal. I saw the post on A hydrovac rebuild, the web site given no longer goes to a site haveing to do with brakes. NAPA has hydrovacs but it is hard to tell by the pics and the vac on the truck no longer having numbers, not sure which will work for my truck. Any info, thoughts, advise welcomed.

ckell,

You shoudn't hear vacuum through the fresh air breather in the cab, the piston seal is leaking.

Take a picture of the unit to NAPA and see if they can help, if not send your unit out for rebuild.

Mike B-

Thanks for the reply on the part numbers for the shoes. Is it possible that the 1958 part number was superceded. Were most Chevrolet heavy truck axles the same for many years? I know eatons were installed as well. I have the 2 speed chevrolet rear axle. Thanks!

I am also in need of rear shoes I believe. Will remove the drums on sunday.
I just sent a mail to alretta truck parts, and asked if they can supply the parts needed. I already bought a new MC and a reman brake booster from them.
I had my car checked at test station and had almost NO brake on right rear, left rear and all front is working 100% fine.
I suspect cleaning and grasing can do the trick, but am afraid the shoes are done.
I will reply here what Geoffrey replies about the shoes and wheelcyls. /Ulf

Jesse,

There was a change in brake parts between 1957 and 1958 (per the parts books)...what changed I don't know as I've never seen the two side by side to compare.

If you have the GM rear it's rated at 15k than the info I provided in the earlier post will be incorrect.

Per my 1963 parts books the 15k rear used from 1958 thru 1963 is part number 3748514.

Per my 1967 parts books the 15k rear used from 1958 thru 1966 is part number 3877023.

What caused the part number to change I can't answer, but it could have been something as simple as the number of rivets holding the facing to the shoe...
