Hello there I'm new here from Riverside Ca. all GM lover no oval's for me, ok enough of that my question is I just picked up in a trade for my 54 Sedan Delivery a 52 Chevy 1.5 ton truck and want to switch out the trans and rear end for something else, the stock trans has a PTO that I don't care for, I have a 4 speed top loader from a 78 Chevy 3/4 truck that I want to put on and go to my local yard and pick up a 1 ton dully or single rear end, will this be a problem.

How do you plan on using the truck?

The 1978 3/4 ton trans may be small and subject to breaking if you decide to carry any weight or pull a trailer.

Just a cruiser(weekend driver) maybe pull a trailer nothing huge, enough to haul a car/truck.

stared looking at the trans. I have laying around and did some research, it turned out to be a SM465 that is supposed to be a heavy duty trans. so it should work out great for what I have in mind.

The SM465 is a pretty stout transmission. GM used them for many years in pickups, one tons and even the medium duty trucks. You should be fine for anything you're likely to throw at it. There were design changes throughout it's life. Make sure of the model year if you need parts.

I see absolutely no advantage to swapping the already installed and working 4 speed SM420 for a later SM465.

Both are 4 speeds, both are direct drive in high gear.

To swap the 465 I believe you need to do some machine work on the bearing retainer and or bellhousing bore. From memory the old one has 4-11/16" diameter and the newer transmission ls likely to be 5-1/8".

On the other hand the SM465 is a good transmission, but I think no better than what you already have in this case, and it's some trouble and expense to swap.

If you're only unhappy with the PTO then remove it, 6 bolts, make a cover or borrow one from the other transmission.

what Grigg said, zero reason to swap those transmissions unless the 460 is in rough shape, just remove and blank the PTO and carry on to swapping the rear, if you can find one that will fit

Or, sell the PTO here and ask for the cover-plate from the buyer?

or if the seal on the pto isnt leaking you could just leave the pto on the trans and the trans on the truck. the only time youll know its there is when you hit your head on it grin

Thank you Gentlemen for all the info, I have been doing more research, and pretty much realize that there will be no difference in trans. swapping so I'm going to put everything back together and drive the truck as is, so now I can move to my next mod which is to move the rear suspension forward to the front so the truck doesn't look funky with the rear almost at the end of the frame, I know the bed is supposed to exceed the end of the frame but I don't want a huge bed either, again you guy's have been a lot of help Thank you all.
