Is there some sort of felt gasket that goes between the block and the distributor assembly? I vaguely remember seeing something like that or am I just getting old?

No seal, gasket, o-ring, etc on 1954 Chevrolet truck engines' distributors' bases (I'm not sure about USA GMC engines).
