I have taken the steering wheel off and installed a new mast bearing with the wire. I fished the wire through the steering mast and out the hole near the steering box. Now...where does this wire need to go? Does it go to a regulator? Does it go to the horn? How do I get power to the horn? I have rebuilt the steering wheel horn button with new parts. Just unsure how to make it honk?

I'm not sure what you are using for a wireing harness but the hot wire comes from any circuit that is hot all the time. You can run it through a horn relay if you want. I didn't, its just wired up to the horn circuit on my fuse box. I rewired my truck with a Painless harness. Hope this helps George | | |

I'll just connect it to one post on the horn and a hot wire to the other post and I should be good to go. I do have an accessory set of matching horns for the 41 but I do believe they should be wired through a relay. I hope this puts an end to my horn problems so I can move on to other things. The steering wheel items for the horn are new and in their proper place. I connected the wire coming from the steering wheel mast to the negative side of the horn. Didn't work. I tried it to the power side of the horn. Didn't work. Connected the steering wheel mast wire to the positive side of the horn and it did blow when I grounded the horn under the hood. Problem is it keeps blowing. I'm at a loss and it looks like the old girl will not have a horn. Any suggestions out there?

First question where is the negative battery post connected to I.E. are you running a positive or negative ground ??? From your last sentence it looks like the horn actually does work, so you can rule a faulty horn out. Assuming you have a negative ground the next step is to take your ground wire (coming from the steering column) and check its continuity to ground. Have someone press the horn button and see if the continuity light comes on. If you do not have a continuity light find anywhere that you KNOW is hot, like the positive battery post. While the horn button is depressed BRIEFLY touch the wire to the hot source. You should get a spark. If not somewhere in the "horn parts" you do not have a ground. | | |

Make sure your source of power is good, hook it up to the horn. hook your mast bearing wire to the horn. Take the horn button off the steering wheel and fabricate something to touch the steering shaft to ground. A wire with an aligator clip hooked to a good ground and touch the center of the shaft thats exposed at the steering wheel nut. Or hook a meter up to the mast bearing wire and the other to ground and check continuity when you push the horn button. Hope this helps.

I used a regulator since I installed the twin accessory horns. The steering wheel wire is a little dificult but, with time, I got through it. I have found that if you use a reproduction horn cap, you'll need to shorten the center screw a bit. Everything works now. I got the spotlight, radio, heater, defroster, fog lights, wiper (elect.) and cigar lighter working properly. Now on to other important items. Thanks so much for the help Stovebolt friends.
