For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 148 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 148 | I have a 49 chevy pick-up with a blown 216 in it, I have the opportunity to buy a 1966 230 at a good price but I don't know if I have even heard of a 230 engine. Do any of u guys know anything about this size engine and also will I have to change out trans, drive shaft, rear end, engine mounts? Sorry guys, I know absolutely nothing about this engine, thanks for any help u can give. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 2,951 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 2,951 | I suspect that it's really a 250ci if it's a 1966. Same block so not much difference. The 230 was offered in 1964 and 1965, but I believe 1966 they offered the 250. I think you can search through some GM Heritage Center documents for the 1966 trucks and find good info about engine specs etc. Here's the link. Just click the word SHOW Chevrolet Truck section and pick the 1966 year. You can download the stuff for free and it's very nice to have. They probably have stuff for your 49 too. It probably won't answer any questions about mounts or trans though. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy red49, the 230 is one of a series of engines that came into use in 1963, the smallest was a 194 the largest was a 250, there was also a truck only variant a tall block engine 292 cu. in.. These engines can be swapped into place, but it is definately not a drop in swap. You will have to fabricate mounts, and purchase an adapter to use your original transmission. If you're not comfortable with this type of fabrication, then I would look for a 235 or 261 which can be configured to be a drop in swap, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 148 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 148 | hey guys thanks so much for the info, the 235 or 261 seems a lot more my speed cant say im much on fabrication an not realy great an engine swaps but I do love to try. Hope I can find one and get it in before the weather gets to bad for the cruiz-ins. | | |
