Well I took my 46 Chevy 2-ton out for a shake-down drive for the first time, well, ever. It likes to follow uneven roads something terrible. After employing Wifey to turn the steering wheel side-to-side I fount both ends of the drag link are shot. I see Jim Carter offers a drag link that he says fits 1/2-ton to 1 1/2-ton trucks. What is the difference between that drag link and the one on my 2-ton? Are they interchangeable? If not, where can I find one for my truck?

Thanks everyone,
Brian

P.S. I'll post this in the Big-Bolts section also.

Drag links are adjustable.
Pull it apart and check for broken springs, worn balls and cups.

Good to know. I'll pull it apart probably tomorrow (if th mid-western rust allows me to). Would you happen to know a source for parts should I need any?

The parts book shows 1937-48 All truck except COE use the same drag link.
The internal end parts fit almost every year.

Really? Well that would be good. Jim Carter wrote me back saying their drag links would fit all trucks EXCEPT the 2-ton and didn't offer a 2-ton version. Guess I'll pull mine apart and see what I'm dealing with first. Thanks!

It appears I found the true difference between the 2-ton drag links on my '46 Chevy and the rest. After doing some parts digging, the replacement stud-balls that are swedged onto the pitman and steering arms measure 3/4 of an inch in diameter (as advertised) and the drag link end internals we can buy are marketed toward that size. I put my old dial calipers on the stud-balls on my truck and they measured roughly .900-inch. I can't find any literature on what the original OEM size was before 67 years of wear but they were still respectably uniform in size so I had no problems re-using them.

I lucked out yesterday as I actually found a good original drag link in a box of parts I got with the truck. The internals and springs were in great shape and the plugs turned in and out freely so I hit it with the wire wheel real quick, then some black bug bomb and snapped it on the truck. Pumped it full of grease and it appears I'm back in business! I'll take it on a test-drive tomorrow and see how she feels.
