55 1st suburban Shop Shark 5 Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 1,186 Rapid City, South Dakota	I'm heading into an area I've avoided for decades as electrical do-hookies and I don't get along. I'm rebuilding my generator and starter for my 1954 Chevrolet 3800. I bought a kit and have disassembled the generator...almost. The generator I'm rebuilding was a working unit and I don't understand why after seeing some of the parts. I can't get this out, what's the trick. Next question is on the armature. This does not look healthy. What's a ballpark price for another one or a rebuild? And lastly, these wires came off something but I'm not sure. Do I need new field coils or is this something I can cobble back together? I don't understand electrical stuff so please use small words and act like you're talking to a 4 year old. I like to do my own o-hauls too if you can clean it up & replace the brushes & bushings. When they are like that get a reman or find a used one in better shape & rebuild it. Normally you do not need to remove that big screw & the field coils. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. LonnieC 'Bolter L Joined: Oct 2010 Posts: 1,232 Orlando, Florida	Hi Bruce - I would love to rebuild my own generator and starter. They are pretty simple to take apart and easy to replace basic parts. But bearings, shaving armitures, etc. are beyond my comfort zone. I agree with George that rebuilt ones are probably better than I could do myself. Stovebolter "Kennethw" - Ken Warner at Classic Generator in Midlothian, TX built the generator that is in my '54. He does starters, too. He used an original case, installed new or rebuilt components for my 12v system, and attached the correct 6v tag. He also tweaked a new voltage regulator for the generator. He does beautiful work, but it ain't cheap. If you screw up, it won't affect the value of the core exchange. The new old generator has a much better armature. I stripped the case down and carefully blasted it and it's in primer now. Also in primer is one end cover and the fan pulley . I'm pretty sure the pulley is either raw metal or silver but have a question on the end covers. On the first generator one cover was painted and one was raw or silver colored. On the current generator both ends are painted. What's correct? Bruce My Trucks Stuff I Collect If it doesn't matter if you win or loose.......why do they keep score?
