I got two 1956 Chevys with the 235s and 3 on the tree. Both were in pieces when I bought them and I just got the tranny rebuilt and bolted back to the bell housing. The problem is that when I went to hook up the linkage to the column "shift box" mounted on the steering column, only the first and reverse control rod matched up and looked like this. (
http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1955truck2/55ctsm0704.htm) However, the rod for 2nd and 3rd was a solid "J-shaped" rod that is approximately the same length as the first and reverse rod. It does not look like this diagram in the shop manual. Both trucks had this rod and not the two rods and "lever" that mounts to the bell housing or back of the block. I'm confused. Am I totally missing what I should have - the two rods and "lever" mechanism like the manual, or is there some kind of conversion or change here? Thanks for your input!
