For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jul 2012 Posts: 36 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jul 2012 Posts: 36 | When my truck is idling, the needle on the amp meter gets buried to the right. When I turn the lights on, they flicker or blink intermittently. As this is happening, the needle on the amp meter bounces up and down in rhythm with the disco lights. I have replaced the battery and the alternator. Actually, the battery was replaced a while ago, but then I ran into this issue of an alternator with an open diode, which kept killing the battery. So, now, I have replaced the alternator. When I picked up the new alternator, I had the battery tested and was told that it was good. I am electrically challenged, so I am not sure what might be causing this, or what I should be checking. Anyone have any ideas? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | if it's showing full charge at idle, what does it do when you up the revs? that needs to be sorted out before messing with lights, or rather, before even turning them on .... the blinking lights are likely the thermal breakers on the light switch, and likely to be something drawing way too much current, such as a fried wire somewhere - have you looked over the wiring? is it time for a new wiring harness?
