Started the 4000 today, had to jump it as I had left lights on. When it started and I went to disconnect the jumper cables I notice 1-2 inch flames in the valley under the intake. A quick shot of water doused them. I figured I had flooded it and it was burning off the gas.

It ran ok and after a couple minutes I started up the hill. It started running rough with decreasing power, then I noticed a thick smoke screen behind me. I backed down the hill with it idling so as to keep the brakes working. It was less than a quarter mile up the hill.

The valley under the intake was covered in oil, the rear spark plug cavity on the driver's side was full of oil, and oil had run down the back of the engine, bellhousing and exhaust, hence the smoke. The smoke stopped as I was backing down the hill. The oil pressure light never came on, but no oil showed on the dipstick, so it is at least a few quarts low. I think the smokescreen was when the truck started uphill all the oil in the valley flowed back and down onto the exhaust.

It's in the driveway now, awaiting some sort of tear-down.

My questions are:

1. Could the small fire (less than a minute, flames about 1 to 2 inches high, cause an oil leak, or more likely a symptom of the oil leak?

2. What would be the most likely place to be leaking? It's filling the valley.

Thanks,

Scott

Scott;

Probably a valve cover gasket for the oil and a leaky carb for the fire and rough running. That's my guess.
