Hello,
I am looking at different sites selling 350 engines. I am not looking for anything crazy. I would just like a 350 to get my '49 rolling again.
(I might like to do some small bolt on things later though)
Some of these sites ask what type of truck I have, obviously the choices do not list a '49 half ton. What type of engine should I be looking at? What questions should I be asking?

I have just installed a TCI Mustang 2. I have a the 350 I bought it with that looks to be a non rebuildable core (so I am told).

New or remanufactured?

GM Peformance Parts sells a 330hp 350 for around $2000. I think it is all new and comes with a pretty good warranty. Just drop it in and go.

I would take anything that was rebuilt well. It does not have to be new.

You can buy a GM crate motor for $1275 with a 3 year/50,000 mile warranty. Summitt says they made 275 hp/330 ftlbs with headers and a small 4bbl. You cant beat the price and it has 4 bolt main ,LT1 rods...you know it has good parts. Thats what i bought for my '63.

Those crate motors are just the long block I believe, you need to add all the other stuff like a manifold and carb water pump,exhaust, distributer, etc.You might find a good deal in your local swap sheet, 350's are everywhere as are all the extras you need.Go for the 2 bolt main with a cast crank, they are a less expensive than the 4 bolts and will support 325 HP no problem.

The warrantee is applicable to models that originally came with 350's. For any other applications such as this, it's one year/12K miles. I've installed crate engines in my '70 Chevelle, '73 Monte Carlo and will be installing one in my '58 Impala .
But IMO that's a better deal than a remanufactured or bone yard engines. Why you ask? Because if anything internal goes wrong within the warrantee period, you just bring it in ANY GM dealer and it's covered...parts and labor . So if you live in Ca, take a trip to NY then develop an internal engine problem you're covered.
