They list a master rebuild kit for the 235 for $700-ish.

Anyone use their kit and have any issues? I don't want to spend the $$$ for hi-perf parts or aluminum pistons.. I'm happy with cast iron.

Is the kit complete (with what it provides) and were the parts good quality?

The code on the block decoded to Nov 58 35-36-3700 truck, so most likely a 59 model year.

I don't have hydraulic lifters.. so I know to ask for mechanical... and that's what the kit lists, new cam and mechanical lifters.

I think that all 235s from 1954 onwards (and all 261s) had aluminum pistons.

Tim I believe You are right.
Cast Iron went out with the advent of the 53 powerglide engine and then all 54 and newer 235s/261s.

The assumption seems to be that the parts in the motor now are 'proper'?

The ones I took out were cast iron. Magnet stuck right to them.

I've found several places that have Master kits... just looking to see who may have used what and if they were happy with it.

Cast iron pistons would have been put in as a replacement in a 1959 235.

What would be in a stock performance kit that has all the bells and whistles?

People have reported buying kits from:

EGGE

Kanter

Patrick's

Jim Carter - sells by parts, it seems

The last engines I rebuilt were many, many years ago - NAPA parts.

When I rebuild a 1954 235 for my Suburban, I'll hope to get advice from Pre '68 Dave on where to get parts.

Just for comparison:
clegg (your Klegg referred-to above ?)

Through the years I have purchased most of my kits from Northern Auto Parts Link , although lately I have been buying most of my parts off eBay.

Northern Auto Parts does have the best price so far... the mechanical lifters are crazy expensive.

Shop told me my cam was shot (fuel pump lobe was gone) and they have been trying to beat the price of the Northern Kit... with no luck.

I'm more not sure how much I would save piecing a master kit together... shipping from multiple vendors eats up most of the savings and for the tiny difference (after shipping) its doesn't seem worth it to go that route.

Lifters can be refaced for little money.

I settled on a master rebuild kit from Clegg.

The cam was shot... so the kit included a new cam and lifters.

Got a good deal, added in valves, springs, valve guides for a good 15-20% off and even free shipping.

Total to me was just over $850.

The master kit showed up today and I just finished inventorying it.

Aluminum pistons (that's good, right?)
New mechanical lifters made in USA.
FeelPro gasket kit.

Most of the parts were a name I recognized... I'm sure the are not premium parts... but nothing was made in china.. mostly USA and Mexico.
