I'm trying to find out some information on the early and later type water pumps used on 235 engines. I have a 1957 235 engine that has the water pump mounted in a hole in the front of the engine block. The engine is going in a 1953 AD 1/2 ton truck.
Originally when I rebuilt the engine, I shortened the shaft on the water pump and pressed on a pulley from a 216 external water pump. I see where they say this is a no-no. It turns the water pump to fast this way.
Question, what was the original size pulley used on the 1957 engine? I wondering why I couldn't machine the 216 hub and remove the pulley and add a larger diameter pulley to it.

thanks John

It is common to use a 292 Ford pulley for the setup you are using.

My fan was turning too fast, had to slow it down. I simply put a 6 3/4" pulley over top of the 4" pulley. I got a slightly longer fan belt and I am as happy as can be with it.

If you look carefully, you can see both pulleys.

Is your motor in an AD? Even with the shortened pump I had wondered about clearance between the fan and radiator. I had considered using a front mounted electric fan on it, but by your picture it looks like the fan will clear.

I have 1/8" between the fan and the balancer. Between the fan and rad is no more than 1/2". Perfect fit in my opinion, yes it's in my '53 panel. Engine is a '60 261.
