the other day i went to atwoods and saw what they called "pre-52 oliver tractor medium green implement paint". looked to me like hunter green paint that would match my truck, so i took a can of hunter green rustoleum over and compared it, looks like the same color to me. but my question is, will it look stock if i paint it this color? if not how much difference in color? if it is really close (or the same) i'll get it because it's only 30 bucks a gallon compared to 50-70 a gallon for automotive paint, and it is much stronger than automotive paint and i will need a more resilient form of paint as my truck will be used almost daily.

I've heard of people using this paint for cars/trucks before. I would also get the hardener that they make for it. makes it more durable. The paint is basically enamel paint. What brand do they sell? They use to sell Vaspar at Tractor Supply, but now sell Majic (sp?). Which is the same thing, just a different brand.....

Ummm REAL automotive paint runs closer to 200 to 1200 dollars a gal... But, I'm sure you just get extra boogers and sawdust for the extra bucks... Which explains why 30 dollars a gal acrylic enamal is so much tougher.

Whitelightning, I have restored many 2 cyl John Deeres over the years, and always use thier Classic Green to insure the correct color for the period.
This is practically the same paint you are talking about. Just a little higher at Deere: $50 to $60 gal. It is a Synthetic Enamel and you must use syn. reducer and syn. hardner (cheap) You won't need much reducer, sometimes none, the less the better. Put it on as heavy as possible without runs, and you will have a great, durable shine.(don't forget the hardner). One gallon of green will cover a tractor with about 3 coats. Ahhhh. The John Deere "putt-putts". Those tractors were surprising at how well they would do in tractor pulls back in the day. Seems like they were hardly working up a sweat.... haven't heard any of them running around the country side for years now. I guess most of them have been retired to tractor shows now.

I've sprayed my share of John Deere implement paint and I fully agree with Old GMC. Use the hardener and with a good prep job it will shine as well as anything else. It is a synthetic enamel and is 1950's paint technology and might not stand up to long term outdoor use as well as a urethane would. I'm not sure I agree with the statement of implement paint being tougher. It's usually the first to start oxidizing.

Real automotive paint runs $80-$100 a gallon around here for a standard color, maybe a little more for a custom color.

Prices on paint vary according to what type your buying and also color. Synthetic enamel would probably be the cheapest, but less durable, then acrylic paint, then you get into your urethanes and basecoat/clearcoat paints......
Reds and blues seem more expensive than greens or yellows ect...

i used "XO RUST" hunter green oil enamel on my dump. the guy at the hardware store said it was better than rusto paint. $25 a gal. painted it four years ago and still looks good and is holding well except for wear and tear. once a year i wax it with mcguires spray and wipe wax and when im done it looks as though it was just painted. dries to touch much quicker the rusto.

Yep, the 2 cyl. Deere putt putts are about out of use now and put into collections. I do have a neighbor near my shop that still uses one on occasion. I hear it start up every few days. I still have one that I use around the place.
Back to the paint, correct: the Syn. Enamel will fade out in the sun over time. The hardner helps some and a yearly waxing.
I have seen some green John Deeres turn blue!

My dad uses Van Sicke on the tractors he restores. It holds up good and covers well, not to mention they have tons of colors.

They also have an automotive grade arcrylic now.

My own personal experience with Van Sickle isn't good. It's probably ok if you're painting a brush hog or a gate but unthinkable to use on anything you really care about. Especially a good truck. I think it's the worst paint out there. Even the cheap DuPont Nason fleet and implement available at O'Rielly's is much much better. My opinion anyway.
