I'm getting close on my 51 3100. I have not decided on paint color yet. I'm certainly not going for these $10,00 paint jobs I see and hear about. I do like the look of the bear metal jobs especially since it will be temporary,My question is after sandblasting is there any other steps that need to be taken before spaying on the clear?

Nah... just spray it.... it's just "temporary".
The faster it fails the sooner it gets done right.

yes, you'll be wasting money putting a clear directly on bare sand blasted metal, try epoxy primer instead

Does epoxy primer come in clear?

No, I'm saying whats it matter? Spray it on after the sand blasters done. It will last about as long no matter how you prep cause clear coat isn't going to stick for more than a few years to bare metal.... thus "temporary". Epoxy primers don't come in clears that I know of. Black, White, grey, and some etch primers are green I think.

Its kinda like when you see a patch work quilt paint job. Meaning some primer here and there and what ever else here and there. If you are putting the what ever stuff on, primer or clear or ? Just finish it how you orignally plan to do it. I know there seems to be some that think the junk patina is cute, and put a clear over it. I guess you can get dulled clear as well. Ask the place you get it at how to do it and how it will hold up. And as far as patina, your neighbors and your insurance company will not like it like you do, nor will the person that opens their door on it or kicks it in a parking lot, their comment will be I thought you didn't give a rip how that pile of junk looked, this comment is for the patina lovin folks, I know you want to clear over bare metal.

Well there is no wrong or right when it comes to someone elses vehicle just opinions everyone think theirs is the correct one.I love them all, patina, rat whatever to each his own.If i had enough paint on it i would try and go patina but most of it has been blasted and primered already.
i didn't know people went around and bumped into cars depending on how it looks. i've had grandma's hit doors on my new truck trying to get a cake into the rear seat, probably rode around for hours looking for me.

Make sure you wipe it down well so there's no grease from your hands, oil that may have been in contact with the steel at one point, etc. Then spray away!

Like I said its not about what anyone likes about their own rat, patina or what ever, it is how its preceived by eveyone else. If it looks like junk and unkept in a degraded looking condition, most normal people will prejudge it. What you or who ever thinks looks cute, with the junk look, others won't. If patina was the thing all new cars would be sold that way. There is no one high up in the food chain that drives a BMW or ? that is going to be happy when a rusty pile parks next to them in a store parking lot. Matter of fact, if that BMW had a dent months before you parked next to them, they will likely have the police waiting when you come out of the store to climb into your patina rig. See what I'm saying. It kinda brings the wrong kind of attention in places, including home unless you live on acreage and have no neighbors.

I'm not going to paint over the patina on my truck just because I think it will offend someone. It's my truck, it looks the way I want it to, and if anyone doesn't like it, it doesn't matter because they don't own it.

If someone claims I dented their car (which I've never heard of issues with from people driving these types of vehicles), they'll promptly be corrected.

Primer is porous, so it absorbs moisture, it's actually a worse choice for durability and preservation of the steel than clear is.

High build and other 2 part POLY primers may be porous, full of talc or other moisture absorbing fillers but Epoxy Primer is WATER PROOF as in water will not penetrate the bond of the surface molecules. It's why BOAT BUILDERS use it to seal their fiberglass...
So I'd choose a good epoxy primer over clear any day. Especially if I had plans to come back and do more body work on the truck. The clear would have to all be removed where as the EP would merely need a good scratch with 80- 180 grit and carry on as normal with filler or what ever.

My understanding is SPI black epoxy has some UV inhibitors in it and would last for two or three years before chalking up and even then just would need sanded down some before doing work over it.

Yea I'm not getting the point of this, most people where i live thinks its cool. In fact the flat black and all, it's not my thing but I don't think they park,judge, or whatever depending on if you like it or not. I think you are trying to convince others to feel the way you do??? Don't, just like what you like and let others have their own, it what makes the world go round.
