I am trying to experiment with rebuilding clam shell upper lift gate hinges and to see if the later style (1951-55) will fit in a (1948-50) with minimal work. I want to document the work. Does anyone know where I can get a couple of the older style hinges for parts so I can continue the modification. I placed an ad in the swap meet with no response, maybe I can talk to a couple of guys that have replaced or modified their hinges and maybe find a source for my parts. shoot me a PM or email me with pictures of what you have done to deal with broken or badly worn hinges. Thanks.........g

send me some pictures of what problems you are having with the hinges and we can come up with a repair plan. I think it was Patrick that repaired his worn hinges by welding and grinding.

What year is you suburban? I am looking into adapting the newer style into the 1947/50, I think it is possible, but I have to do some more research.

I think I have a pair of both years... Those from my 49' and the later ones. I can try and get pics later after I dig them out.
Did you need specific pics?

Eddie, I have pictures of both sets, in fact I now have both sets. What would help me is pictures of the mount opening on the header with dimensions of the opening. I did a quick check this morning before I left the shop and I think that I can make either styles work. I believe the opening might differ, I only had a 1951 header to work with and the 48 still has the hinges installed. Unfortunately they were welded in and I could not see the actual opening.

Yup - It was me. I also still have a NOS 49 hinge as well. I may still have photos George. [email protected] I did the repair myself, but I suggest that if you're not an advanced welder, have somebody else do it.

I took the NOS hinge, measured it out and tig welded up the channel and measured it out and filled it and ground it out
