I have a 235 that is going into a truck that originally had a 216, so the manuals are not of much help, as it lists the parts for the 216.

So, what is the best way to get a compatible vehicle type for when the parts guy/gal says 'for what vehicle'?

whatever year the engine is, and car or truck

So if I say 55 GM truck I am going to get the right parts? I'm looking at doing a tune up and needed points/plugs rotor... but even I thought how do I know what to get?

So will any 1955 GM 235 truck part work?

No.

Casting #s find yours and go from there...

some more major parts may differ, but electrical tune up bits will be the same for any 55 235, as well as gaskets .... but call it a "55 Chevy truck", not a "GM" or you'll have'em tellin you GMC didn't have a 235 grin

There are differences between early USA 1955 235 engines and later USA 1955 235 engines (identified by a "55" or a "255" in the engine serial number). The 6v/12v difference most likely won't affect the "tune up bits", but some of the gaskets will be different.

And, Bill's comment about "GM 235" and GMC not having a 235 is for us Americans. As Bill would know (but, I am only assuming), a 235 engine might have been used in a 1955 Canadian GMC small trucks (a 235 was used in 1954 GMC small trucks).

I have the casting number web pages bookmarked, so I will take that info with me.

Would it get me 'closer' to the right parts if I used the SN on stamped after the distributor?

Is one more accurate than the other?

Yes, "the SN on stamped after the distributor" is the Engine Serial Number I referred-to in the post above.

What is that serial number?

I THINK my motor is out of an 1958-9 3700 truck

The engine SN is FIII9K - Flint, MI Nov. 19 34-35-3700 truck

Head - 3836848
Block - 3764476 58-62 235

K 18 8 December 18th, 1958

Is this correct? Other than the motor mounts being on the side, and not under the crank pulley is that the only real major difference compared to a mid 50's 235?

My truck has the motor mounts for under the crank pulley. It looks like I can just drill the flange on the front cover and use that with a rubber mount.

Or will that not work either??

Good job on the decoding.

The location of the water pump and fan is different. And, the 1958 fan will be too close to the radiator.

Pre '68 Dave makes a relocation plate. You use the original style water pump; and, the plate places the old style pump in the correct location on the new style block.

This provides better cooling and you do not have to fool around with getting a short shaft water pump (or shortening the shaft on the water pump),

Your solution to the front mount is correct.

Thanks for the verification. I have a lathe and mill so I just may fiddle with shortening the pump shaft a few inches. I have a
52 235 with the water pump to take measurements.

If I get fed up I'll look for this adapter plate.

Thanks to all that helped!
