The brake cables I got won't work. They would for the old style rear axle. So what works on the new style axle? Cables for 60 ??????

Kicking self for selling off my Taskforce trucks.
Still looking for an LCF or conventional big bolt in decent shape.

What do you mean by "old style axle" and "new style axle"? Do you have a GMC?

I believe there is a difference in the 3100 & 3200 cables.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

What's wrong with them, the length or the attachment system? I've seen two different attachment methods but I don't know which years or models were supposed to have which method.

Oh, you don't have a limited slip differential, do you?

only the front cable is longer for the long bed, the rear cables are the same for 31 or 32 ....
and the brake assemblies are the same for all light trucks 55.2-59

They are listed by many suppliers as using the same cable but they do not use the same cable. The GMC has a Spicer rear end. The Chevy cables will not work on a Spicer rear end. If someone knows of a supplier for the correct GMC cables, I would like to know.

what is it that makes the cables not work on the Spicer rear?

That could be the issue. Positraction '59 Chevrolet trucks used the GMC Spicer 45 axle. Parking brake cable and rear drums are not available for the axle.

Okay have 2 trucks with the "new style" rear axle. The new style axle is a non removable 3rd member type. The old style is just that, and you adjust the carrier bearings with the spanner nuts or what ever you call em. The new style is a spreader bar or hammer in the races and shim type, like most modern rear ends.
Anyway the cables Red58 linked to, the more costly one is the rear cable I got 2 that look just like that. Won't work on the new style rear end. The new style has some metal flanges that bolt to the brake backing plates, and I think older 50's trucks did that same sort of thing. I guess the new style is the Spicer 45?? So Longbox55, how long did they use this axle? Will newer cables work?

Truckolet, I got mine here for my Napco:

http://inlinetube.com/Brake%20Cables/brake%20cable%20listings/cables.htm

Figure out what you need and they can make it if they don't normally carry it in stock. I got mine in stainless steel, not that the old ones were really rusty.

I think they sell other odds and ends of brake parts, too, to answer your other thread.

Good luck,

For Chevrolet, it was a 1 year only axle, only used on Positraction equiped 1/2 tons, GMC used it '55-'59, though some GMCs did use the Chevrolet axle. Unfortunatly, the cable are specific to that axle, I don't beleive later Chevrolet cables will work. Ed might have the best answer, having them custom built to fit rather than searcing for rare/obsolete originals.

Good luck,

Is yours the Dana spicer 45 axle? They list only the snap in cables for 1/2 ton and bolt on for 4x4 and 3/4 tons. ????????
