If it is a factory 3 speed SM318 type transmission the after market shifters generally sucked. There was no place the the shifter could directly mount so they came with rinky dink brackets that bolted under the tail housing bolts.
If it were me and I couldn't be convinced to install a more modern 5 speed I'd at least look for a 3 or 4 Saginaw where the shift can mount to the tail housing. Floor shift 3 speed were common in 6 cylinder Camaros.
Lots people seem to be installing s10 type 5 speeds. I'm not sure of all the details but 5 gears with an overdrive 5th will make your truck more usable on the highway.
If you are using it primarily off road the granny 4 speeds will make you happier. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 591 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 591 | I have a floor shifter for my 1957 NAPCO with a 1st gear synchro Saginaw (7 bolt) 3 speed OD trans. Because the trans was a later model (1965) trans I ended up using bucket seats since I couldn't get the shifter forward enough. For what it's worth this in the info I got from Hurst, I just felt better about a Hurst rather than a cheaper conversion kit. I chose the first option, works well but did require some modifying:
From Hurst: HUU-3667271 shifter and HUU-3670010 installation kit. It is listed for a Chevelle but it will work with your transmission and the stick has a big bend for seat clearance.
HUU-5010002 is your second option. It is the Indy SSA shifter for the 3 speed and has a slightly bent stick for the seat. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2011 Posts: 35 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jul 2011 Posts: 35 | Notice Patrick's make a saginaw 4 speed shifter specifically for Task Force trucks. I looks like they forward mount the shifter and have quite a bend in it so might clear the bench seat.
They also have a kit to adapt the saginaw 4 speed to 48 -> 54 trucks without changing to an open drive shaft.
Anybody have any experience with those? | | |
