You should be able to push the u-joint rear yoke back far enough to allow the torque-tube to be pushed upwards. Then you would be able to remove the u-joint, ball/bell-cover/housing, collar, and rear yoke. What transmission inspection cover are you referring to?

Yes, it does look impossible with the 4-speed. Thank you for correcting this - my recollection is most likely for a 3-speed (but, now I am even doubting that).
