I have a 1952 3100 that is supposed to have a 1959 235c.i. car engine in it. I even saw the car it came out of, but I know that doesn't prove anything. The engine # is F042 then either a 6 or a small case b. Followed by an L. Otherwise, Very clear. The list I have for 1958 -65 Chevy motors does not have a suffix that begins with an F. Any clues? Next the Vin. It reads 21KPC-2801. While that is a 10 didgit vin, I think the first didgit should be a letter to designate the assembly plant. So the order of the vin is incorrect. No worries on the vin matching the title, it does- especially since the Va. State Police and district attorney issued the title going by the vin on the truck. Vin tag looks authentic as issued by Chevy. It just seems like a "incorrect" #, especially the order. Any ideas? Back to the motor. It has the 848 head and it is a 235 c.i. (reasonably certain). While none of this is detrimental to the truck, I am just curious. Thanks-Panhead

F0426 works out to a Flint produced engine built on April 26. The L code is bit tricker, as it varies depending on year. What I have found by checking the codes at the GM Heritage site, is that it is not a passneger engine, but rather a HD truck engine. If it is a '58 engine as you suspect, the you're in for a bonus, as the L code is for a 261 from a 6000 series truck, rather than a 235.

OK casting # 3769716. By the links ya'll provided this is a 58-62 235 c.i. TRUCK engine. A 3769717 wouldda been the 261 engine. One last ? The small "plate" to the left of the casting # just above and a little to the right of starter, D 21 1. Is this a date code? And I gotta tell ya, I put a rebuilt Carter 2100 YS carb on this motor and it runs unbelievable!!! No comparison to the 216 that the cops crushed for having a modified suffic number!! Very happy, didn't think a 60 year old motor would run this good/strong.

That's the date code alright. It decodes to April 21, 1961. That does correspond with the serial number, which in this case the "L" in the code is a 235 used in a 50 series 1 1/2 ton truck.
