For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 6 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 6 | I have a few questions that I can get some help on answering. I ran across a 1954 Chevy Car all stock with a Hydra-Matic. Can someone tell me if the shifter on the column are the same as what would of came in a 1954-54 Chevy truck? It looks very same to me but have not been able to find any thing conclusive to say it is the same. I didnt take a pic of the car so I have been looking all over the net to try and find a picture of a 1954 car with a hydra-matic column to compare to with truck pics. Found lots of truck pics! Your thoughts or help would be appreciated. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | A Chevrolet car would have had a 2-speed Powerglide transmission. A Chevrolet truck would have had a 4-speed Hydra-Matic transmission.
In 1954, the gear indicator on the column would have had the same housing, but the indicator markings for gear numbers would have been different.

I'm an old stovebolter and have never seen a hydro come stock in a Chev car. I've actually installed a hydro from a truck into a 50 chev. It requires all the linkage, the two piece bellhousing and flywheel/fuild coupler to attach it to a stock 235. I was able to use the three speed coulumn selector for gear change. If it is a truck hydro, get a truck column because it has the correct detents for the 1-2, 1-3, 1-4,N, R. If the trans is actually from some other car the detents in the valvebody aren't the same. Could have been clugged together from a Pontiac, Olds, Cadillac, Lincoln, Hudson or Packard. Carefully clean the tag on the trans, getall the code numbers and call Northwest Transmission, they will tell you what year and make it came from. Then you will know if you should use a the column with a gradicule that reads L, 2, DR, N, R. Good luck with all your endevours, KB. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 1,299 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 1,299 | Tim, correct me if I am wrong but GM cars with hydra-matic were Oldsmobile, Cadillac, and Pontiac. Warren told me that Olds shifters were more similar to chevy trucks and the Pontiac was more similar to the GMC version.
I agree that a chevy car would not have had the hydra-matic? | | |
