1st gear rattles or chatters yet reverse does not also 2-3 gears are quiet.Anybody got any ideas about the shaft being bad. If i had clutch -pressure plate- T-Out bearing problems it would do it all the time?I have access to a replacement trans so i may just change it. I know it is best to get in there and look at the guts but it may be easier to just swap to the new old one. This is only 1st when you start out from a stop sign. THANKS

Yes, the first gear and reverse gear is the same, it is controlled by a first and reverse idler. If it was the main shaft (unlikely) you would not go nowhere. Pop open the inspection plate and see if the gear is worn or has excessive play, or teeth at the bottom. Let us know what you find.

Even though first and reverse share one of the gears, called the first reverse slider, they use the opposite sides of the gear.
It is common for the first gear side of that gear to wear through the case hardening much faster then the reverse side as it does not see as much use.
