does anyone have any ideas or where to purchase door pulls for my 65,i was thinking of something that would use the exsisting screws on top of access panel on door,other people tend to pull on the end of the handle when closing door and it is getting sloppy,any ideas or comments would be appreciated,i was thinking of making my own from leather,but if someone make a product to fit would be nice,thanks gents,

Ive have 2 65s,neither has armrests,was this an option?there are no holes either where an armrest would have previously exsisted

pick your color - if they didn't come with arm rests from the factory, there were no holes in the cover plate, but the threaded inserts will be in the door behind it

On our 66 Suburban, it had it on the drivers door, but not the passenger door. I am adding them to the Passenger side, and there were no weld nuts behind the cover. You can buy the weld nuts from an aftermarket parts supplier. I believe I got mine from Orange truck and car shop in CA. You will need to transfer the hole thru the side cover. I think there are dimensions in the service manual. You can probably get a decent arm rest from one of the parts sellers here in the parts for sale forum.

There are no threaded inserts in the door shell, behind the door panel, but there are two sets of square holes, in the door shell. A pair for the forward position and a pair for the rear position. Either position, requires a pair of spring nuts, which are square nuts with a capture spring on two edges, that hold them in the square hole, from the backside of the door shell. You can get them from the yellow bins of most of the large box stores, like Lowe's & The Home Depot.

the ones that are in some of the ones I had were pinched into the holes from factory; no weld or no springs

Any of the parts houses as OEM replacements you. The come with a backing plate as well. However, I will also chose to place a larger plate in the panel as well to spread out the load, 1/8" piece of flat aluminum, no real weight added. Other than a straight nut and bolt application to secure, you can choose you use caged nuts.

These are the door pulls I installed in my '65. I got them from JC Whitney. They install with 2 screws thought the plate and into the door skin. The truck is driven almost daily for a couple years now and they haven't lossened up yet.

If the arm rests are attached to the inner door panel, they will work, but you may get some "oil-canning" in the inner door panel, over time. The arm rest was secured, through the inner door panel, into the door shell structure with a special nut, as described above. Obviously, there are countless ways to secure them...owner's choice.

Got any tips for locating the holes in the door panel such that they line up with the holes in the door frame? Or is it just a matter of measure thrice, drill once?

the nuts are 1/4 nc. just grind a centre point on one end and insert it with the point towards where the panel will be. fasten the panel in several points and give a little tap with your hand on the panel where the point is. take the panel off and drill it

From the rear of the door, use the 1st & 3rd square holes for the rear arm-rest position or the 2nd & 4th square holes for the forward arm-rest position.

Although I don't have the image uploaded on my computer, the Accessory Installation manual has a template for locating the holes in the inner door panel, for drilling. Ron's suggestion above, is a great solution, if the template isn't available.
