it looks like i've bought and installed a 12v lighter for my 53 gmc with a 6v system and it works but won't get hot enough to light a cigarette. maybe some electrical engineering such as a resistor in parallel or shortening the filament or whatever you call the part in the lighter that gets hot would work?
thanks for any and all suggestions, short of replacing it with a 6v lighter and throwing this one away :-)

short of throwing it away and getting a 6v element, you could change yer whole truck over to 12v, then you could use the lighter socket to power somea those new age things like a cell phone, but it'd prolly be cheapest by far to just quit smokin!! grin

Yeah, you should quit smoking. grin They DO make voltage multipliers but that'd be much more work than just quitting and much more expensive than just buying the right lighter.

Just keep using the 12 volt lighter, and while you're waiting for it to get hot enough to light up, you'll get over the habit! Think about how long that one smoke will last while you're waiting for the lighter to work!

old_blue, I don't know if you smoke or not, I really don't care and I won't make a cute remark like the others have.

I got one of those 12 volt lighters also. What I did was get a six volt lighter from an old junker and replaced the knob with the one from the 12 volt(which worked just fine). I now have a 6 volt lighter that works and has a knob that matches the other knobs.

I don't smoke but I do have a 6 volt lighter that works.

Couldn't you just put a voltage booster on it?

Or does it use too many amps?

brendanm720, dunno. don't know how many amps the booster can supply or how many the lighter needs. maybe a good solution ifen i can't find a 6v unit. thought about moding the winding by shortening it a bit, but that doesn't seem to be that easy to do either. oh well, on to bigger and better things like rear axle seals and truck bed wood kits.

I don't see how changing the 12 volt element for a six volt element will do anything for charging cell phones, all of which require 12 volts.
