For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Dec 2007 Posts: 26 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Dec 2007 Posts: 26 | I am in the process of updating a 42 chevy 1.5 ton brush truck/firetruck to daily driver, among other things I am wanting to convert to power steering. I know there are kits to do this on 1/2 tons, but What about a Big Bolt conversion? Looking for someone who has done this already, hopefully a kit exists. Thanks in advance. John Central Valley Ca.

Also I found the Filling Station has a power assist kit, but it requires a modification to the pitman arm, so I need to check it out, says it fits 1947-50. I left a msg with Straight Line out of San Jose, got a call back and a guy there is willing to assist in selecting a new box..

One is 4WD, other is 2WD. No kits available as far as I know. Might have to weld additional mounting ear to frame for all 4 Saginaw mounting bolts. Use GM pump, must fabricate mount to engine. Move steering shaft to hook up to Saginaw, 2 u-joints required, mount for bottom of steering column. Scout box can also be used, mount on top of frame, pitman arm must point fwd, place(?) in TX can change guts to mount other way. Saginaw boxes historically crack frames on modern GM trucks, might want to reinforce frame while in there. Use 3-corner file to remove skip-spline to orient pitman arm where necessary.
