It is labeled 6v but after several attempts at starting my 216 it is very hot to the touch and I am not getting spark. ?? I think I did everything right but am having doubts... Any suggetions?

Did you replace the coil because it wouldn't start with the old coil? It's possible that the LT wire from your distributor to the coil is always at ground potential, maybe a missing insulator in the points or a pinched wire shorts it to ground, thus the opening of the points does nothing.

I can see spark at the points when I flick the points arm with the rotor off.
The ignition switch wire is tied to the negative pole of the coil and the distributor wire is tied to the positive. This is right isn't it?

I think the ignition switch wire goes to the positive pole on the coil and the wire from the distributor goes to the negative pole on the coil.

When you open & close the points you should get a blue spark from the high tension wire comeing out of the coil holding it close to the engine. You could possibly have a bad condenser. If everything else is good you must have gotten a bad coil. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum

I also cleaned up the poles on the battery and the clamps coming off of the battery. After I did all that, my truck fires up easily and idles great. Thanks for your thoughts in the previous posts...
