After pulling the filter element out and prior to draining the crankcase there was about 1 1/2 inches of oil in the bottom of the filter cansiter. Does that sound about right? I guess I was expecting there to be more. It's a Fram remote filter. There must be a check valve to keep the oil from draining back to the crankcase everytime you shut down, correct? Otherwise, how would you know what the oil level should be on the dipstick? Also, although the oil still looks very clean, it didn't really look like the oil level has ever been very high on the filter.

There is no check valve, unless you installed one. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 144 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 144 |

The oil is just pumped through the filter with a small amount of residual oil remaining in the canister. So once the oil is changed and the engine started the oil level should go down slightly on the dipstick to account for the residual oil in the canister. Bring it back up to full once and it should be good and reading accurately.
Thanks for listening to me think this through.
Dave

The oil will only drain to that level without the assistance Dads50 mentioned.

If this is the first time after a rebuild maybe you could check the dredges in the bottom for metal and stuffs... | | | | | Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 144 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2011 Posts: 144 | Thanks everyone.
