I'm changing my oil filter for the first time since the rebuild. After pulling the filter element out and prior to draining the crankcase there was about 1 1/2 inches of oil in the bottom of the filter cansiter. Does that sound about right? I guess I was expecting there to be more. It's a Fram remote filter. There must be a check valve to keep the oil from draining back to the crankcase everytime you shut down, correct? Otherwise, how would you know what the oil level should be on the dipstick?
Also, although the oil still looks very clean, it didn't really look like the oil level has ever been very high on the filter.

is it a bypass filter, or a full flow filter? is it plumbed in correctly? pictures are very good. There is no check valve, unless you installed one.

After thinking about this I think I'm understanding. The oil is just pumped through the filter with a small amount of residual oil remaining in the canister. So once the oil is changed and the engine started the oil level should go down slightly on the dipstick to account for the residual oil in the canister. Bring it back up to full once and it should be good and reading accurately.

Thanks for listening to me think this through.

Dave

The canister will not drain completely.

you can either remove the drain plug on the bottom of the canister(If you have one) or use a suction tool to remove the old oil.

To expand you have a small hole in the center tube. The oil will only drain to that level without the assistance Dads50 mentioned.

it looks good from here. If this is the first time after a rebuild maybe you could check the dredges in the bottom for metal and stuffs...
