I have a 1952 1/2 ton Chevy. I am installing a dual action fuel pump. What size lines do I use? Does anyone know a source for a manifold-type fitting that I can use to connect the two vacuum lines from the fuel pump to the intake manifold and then I want to use a rubber hose to the wiper motor. Any help would be appreciated.

Your lines should go intake to vacuum pump to wiper motor, not back to the intake. Use steel tubing with short pieces of rubber hose for the lines or the rubber hose will collapse. Sorry, I can't recall the line size off the top of my head.

Use the same size line as what is on the vacuum port of the fuel pump, i think it was 3/16 or 1/4 and get the lines as close as possable to the pump and use high pressure fuel line (heavy wall will not collapse.

I have thought of putting a dual action fuel pump on my truck and this is a good question. I am tired of my wipers dieing when I accelerate. If I use the correct size lines is there a good route for them to follow? Since they would be traveling over (or around) the engine from the intake manifold to the fuel pump then back over (or around) the engine to go into the firewall for the wiper pump. Anyone with experience in this? Pictures?

Please look at my other thread. Is what I'm showing, a dual pump similar to what you guys are yakin about ? Will they interchange between a 216 and a 235 ? What is the big advantage of a dual pump anyway ? Since you guys are talking about wiper motors, it sparked my interest but I have a 235 ci.

I bought a duo action pump for my 235. I understand they put them on the 57 and up 235s and will work on my engine. I am trying to figure out where the lines are on these newer trucks and what they are made of.

Does a rubber fuel line hook the intake line to a metal line that is attached to the fire wall? Then is another rubber fuel line used to connect to the pump? Then for the wiper motor is a line run to the fire wall and connected to the motor by the rubber line again?

Somehow the line will have to run from the intake manifold over the engine to the fuel pump then back to the wiper motor and not get melted or burnt. Does heat come into play? These motors have rubber and leather gaskets. Does the air get hot and would it hurt the stuff inside the wiper motor?

Does anybody with a newer truck (57-59) have this set up? Any pictures?

Dennis - Go to the other thread, there are some good pictures there. Best to run steel for the lines, except for a short line to the wiper motor. That way you don't have to worry about heat or deterioration. I can't speak for the task force manuals, but on the AD the factory assembly manual shows these lines.

Fred T,

Did you see GM drawings of the lines for a dual-action fuel pump in a 1/2 ton truck? If you have the reprint of the 47-54 Factory Assembly Manual, would you please post the page number?

Thanks, Tim

Thanks Fred! The other posting had wonderful pictures of exactly what I needed.

Tim, your front end (truck) looks great. It is great to see how you ran the lines. I have been scratching my head for some time over that. Now it seems so logical. I don't feel too good.

Another question. Tim, where did you get the takeoff for the intake manifold? It looks like it screws into the manifold and the line going to the pump screws into it. That would be nice. Right now I have a takeoff that rubber line is clamped onto. I wouldn't have to clamp a small piece of rubber line as a connector.

I guess a black pipe street elbow and a reducer would work. That would look funky.

Thanks again.

Tim, my computer at home bit the dust last night. It might be a day or two.

oldbluetruck,

I used lengths of copper wire to test several different ways of running the lines. Even then, I scratched my head for a few days before settling on the routing in the picture. Most likely it is not as it was originally run (Fred T - thanks for looking for a diagram/picture - post it if you are able to find it).

On a 1/2 ton truck with standard fuel pump, the fitting on the intake manifold is a hex-sided plug with with a 2-3" pipe/tube that is bent at a right angle and directed towards the firewall. A rubber line/hose was originally used from the fitting on the intake to the wiper motor.

The vacuum line fitting on the intake manifold in the picture came off an intake manifold from either a larger truck or a truck that had a dual-action fuel pump. Some of the larger trucks had metal lines with flare fittings.

I agree with you that you should be able to find a brass or steel fitting to use on the manifold. Most likely you will not find a single piece to work but a reducer/adapter-or-two should do it.

Tim

47-54 factory assy manual, vacuum pump instl is in Sect 0, sh 18.00 (downdraft carb), sh 18.01 and 18.02 for updraft carb. Also, sect 6, sh 14.00 for the carb side for updraft carb. If you don't have the manual, e-mail me at [email protected]
