I have sprayed down the square nuts over and over, but they are just too rusted. I am thinking of just taking a grinding tool and cutting them off. I just want to know if that will mess up putting them back on (running boards(, or if they are bolts that can replace. Thanks

I have a 46. If they are like mine they are carriage bolts. They slide into a channel in the running board. Easy to replace when you get it all apart.

Many people simply break those flat-headed carriage bolts (or, cut the bolts).

Several vendors sell replacement-bolt sets (I think some bolt-sets are stainless steel).

Classic Parts calls them Step Bolts

I've been splitting the bolts with a grinder till the nut is cut in half then they come off easy with no damage to running board.

These old bolts are in my blood. Hard thing is focusing on just one.

I didnt even bother trying to save the old rusted,,crudded bolts. Just twist them til they snap and get some new 1/4-20 carriage bolts for replacement, from your local ACE Hardware.
Then you can save the cuss words for another project............
