My rule about not buying anything from HF that my life or livelihood depend on still holds true because I've had way too many failures with HF tools.
Last summer they sent me a monthly sale flyer with their winches on sale. Ironically they had the 12K winch priced cheaper than the 9K and 6K winches. Reasoning that the stress on the 12K (from pulling my 3K+ coupe onto the trailer), relative to what it's designed to handle, would be less than on the 6K AND the 12K was $30 cheaper I bought one. I also bought their winch mount. I had them mounted on my trailer along with a battery mount for a dedicated winch battery. So far I've used it twice and haven't had a problem with it.
Yesterday I got an email from HF about a wireless remote control for the 6K, 9K & 12K winches for $19.95. Thinking I can then load the car by myself without having to holler at the wife to steer the car up the ramps I ordered one of those today.
For anyone interested HF has the winches on sale again. I highly recommend the winch mount as well.

Thanks for the report.
I am thinking of getting one of those HF winches for my 6v COE-flatbed. Do you use the dedicated 12v battery (charged by a battery charger), or do you somehow charge the dedicated battery using your alternator/generator?

The 1 o'clock pin (when looking at the female side) is dedicated to trailer power for recharging RV or winch batteries. Whenever I have the trailer plugged into my pickup it's charging the trailer battery (when the key is in the run position). I recommend turning the tow vehicle off or unplugging the trailer before using the winch. A winch can pull hundreds of amps under load and the trailer connector isn't made for that. Seven pin connector.

That means two batteries. I mounted a disconnect switch under the ABS hydraulic control mounting plate and ran some heavy gauge wire from my auxillary battery to a quick connect at my rear bumper. I have some short leads on my car hauler's Warn 12,000 winch that I connect to the bumper QD. Add the 20' wired remote and it's not a bad set up. | | |
