For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! I can't imagine what's going on inside this engine, crusty oil and water, bearings that haven't seen any lube for years, and moving parts that are dry. I'll have to run it a few more times and keep flushing the water I think till I decide if it's really good or not. I'm thinking the water pump is toast, but before I buy a new one, I'll run it a few more times. I'm not driving the truck yet, I still have to install the new fuel tank and deal with the brakes a little more. I'm pretty excited though, definitely a major milestone. I wouldn't worry about whats going on inside of the engine. 5 years isn't that long. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 | Oh that is special music! That is a great video and a neat old truck. I started mine after 17 years of sitting outside. It kind of smoked a bit!
I think I saw a wild turkey walking along in the background during the video. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2012 Posts: 72 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2012 Posts: 72 | Thanks guys!
I ran it again last night and I'm "pretty" sure the water pump is bad. Something in the front of the engine is grinding really bad. I've changed enough water pumps to know that it's probably bad by the sound of it, but maybe, besides leaking, is there any other way to find out for sure? A new one for the 228 is $150, so I'd like to be sure. It sure idled nicely last night. I got the carb adjusted a little better, fixed the valve cover leak, and tightened down the radiator hoses a little better.
I actually sat in the cab while it was running and went thru the gears a bit. Good to know the clutch is working and everything is turning properly. The brakes work too even though they still need some bleeding. I don't have the wheels on it and it's up on jack stands.
Oh, and I got the new gas tank in. I POR-15'd it and it looks beautiful. All new fittings and hoses to it as well. One more thing crossed off the list.

Maybe that might help. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2012 Posts: 72 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2012 Posts: 72 | Good idea! I'll try it!
