Hey fellas, I see a 1968 gmc longed for sale with a 256 inline six, four speed manual. Looks to be in good shape. I've not heard much about the 356 engine, or the 68 gmc in general (heard much more about Chevy c10s). Any opinions one the 256 engine, or the 68 gmc long beds more generally? Will be a daily driver with some light hauling. Look forward to hearing what you guys think. Pft

My experience with the GMC's (this is 60-66 models) is that if you don't get into the big unique GMC V-6 motors, there isn't that much difference between Chevy's and GMCs, other than grills/trim. On my son's 66, the GMC's came with Hotchkiss (leaf spring) rear suspensions and the Chevy's with coil spring/track arm (NASCAR), but I think you could order either one with the other. I thinik by 68 that was no longer a difference as they both went leaf spring.

So basically if you stay away from the V6 big block, it is more of a cosmetic thing as far as I am concerned. The V6 is a cool motor, but surprisingly hard to find parts for them.

Having said the above, I am not an expert, but others on this board are.

Thanks R-Bo. I've not been able to tell too much difference but have sometimes heard that it is harder to find parts for the gmc trucks. The thing that really struck me was the seller's description of a 256 inline six... as I understand it GMC only produced that engine for two years, and that was in the early 40s. Wonder if I'm looking for trouble if I buy a truck with an engine that rare. Thanks again for the info.

Are you sure it's a 256 or was he saying a 250 6 cyclinder. I had a 66 GMC with the 250 and it is a sweet little running engine. I know they made that engine for a good while because that family of engine was in the cars for chevy up into the early 70's. Larry

I second that. I'm sure that's what the seller meant. I've never heard of a '60's-era 256. On the other hand,if the "Jimmy's weren't equipped with the 305E's,(or bigger),V-6's,the in-lines available were 250's,and 292's. Hope this helps.
