Mine had the "regular" 180 degree thermostat. What year is your 261?
The thermostat (Dole Pellet Bypass) and housing on my 1960 261 is different in style from other 235 thermostats that I have seen (Harrison Poppet Ball). I put a 235 thermostat and housing on that engine in my 1954 Suburban.
