For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 872 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 872 | Ok, here are the photos: This says 53 235 truck motor: the front engine mounts are different than than car 235 The kidney bean plate means that this is a low pressure 'dipper' motor, but has insert bearings on the rods and crank (no babbit) This is the oil flow to the bypass filter (front hose) and the rear hose is actually hooked into the block drain (there is a block heater on the end of that hose). Is that close? Other than the 'dippers' on the con rods that's the only drawback to this motor? | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,107 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,107 | tim has a good web page on how to decode engines. maybe he'll post it. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 872 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 872 | No, its not. I have 3 motors, this is the second one I am trying to figure out.
Plus most block number pages simply state what year and CID the motor is. Since this motor is a 53 and there was a pretty big change for 53's mid year I wanted to get the info right.
Please take another look at the photos... am I close to ID'ing the engine and what's in it??
I believe this is a 'low pressure' 'dipper' motor. I *think* the rods may have babbit for bearings. What about the mains? Are they babbit also? I read about 'converted' rods, but that would also require a new (or drilled for oil passages) crankshaft.
I may just put this one on the back burner... but its running now and the motor style is much closer to the original (a 45 235) than the 54+s are (water pump being the biggest issue).

They all say the same thing, year and CID. Not what's in it. Evidently there are several iterations of babbit and insert bearings. I am not sure, since the is a truck motor (ID;d as one) would this have insert or babbit bearings? I think that truck motors went insert bearings before 54 when cars did (Powerglide cars had insert, 3 speed still had babbit?) | | | | | Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 872 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2008 Posts: 872 | The motor is not in the original truck, its just whats in there now (the truck is my second 1943 Chevy 1.5 4x4 G506.. I have 3 total).
That block code, and the plate on the drivers side engine. All the sites put the block at 50-52. But both sites specifically state 'TRUCK'. What does that mean? Just the motor mounts?
So the crank would have insert bearings and only the rod bearings are babbit?

I just noticed that I was typing in 53 as the year, it is a 50-52 (one site did narrow it to 52 by the start of the SN)
Sorry for the confusion!!!
So its a 52 truck truck motor, insert bearings for the crank, babbit for the rods, low oil pressure (aka the dippers).
I need a break.. all these numbers are confusing me. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 | It has the little plate for the oil distributor and so it is a low pressure motor. All Chevy sixes had insert main bearings and this motor would have the babbitt directly on the rods. If the side cover does not go all the way up to the top of the head, it is a 1950 to 52 motor. There were 235s like this in US trucks and 216s of this style in some Canadian vehicles. | | |
