My instrument cluster is shorting out or malfunctioning, as it only occasionally and randomly shows speed and turn signal operation. Am wondering if repair of mine is a remote possibility or if replacement (at $400+) is my only option. Either way, how in the hell is this thing removed??? Would very much appreciate replies. Had a '93 S-10 pickup with a similar problem. In winter when things were moist, it would work about half the time, but when it dried in the summer heat, I would rarely get a reading. Investigating the fix, these modules come as complete factory pods. Not sure if you're a computer wiz, but I didn't feel comfortable cracking one.
Replacing the whole pod was the only solution. However, there are a lot of S-10 Chevy's or GMC's in the yards, so pulling one out of a wreck may be the best route. In addition you'll learn how best to putll the entire dash assembly so you can get at the pods. I'm not aware of a simple way of testing them for function when doing the salvage. You may be able to splice analogue gauges from earlier years, but I'll let others tell you if that is advisable.
Hope you live in a warm climate where you can get at the dash of wreck with compatible dash components. | | |

I've had some difficulty in locating any Blazer skeletons to pilfer parts from here in my area. Local dealerships recommend I pull mine, turn it in as a core and they'll order a rebuilt one for me, $400+ and a one year guarantee. Before you get much further, post a parts wanted ad in the Swap Meet (you have to register, but it's free). It is probably best posted under "other" as your dash is younger than Stovebolts. You may find others who can pass these components along.
Also, keep an eye on ebay, as dash components come up every now and again.
Although I no longer own the S-10 pick-up with the bad dash, I have done better than the delaer price of $400 on some similar items. | | |
