What year engine?
What year clutch housing?
What year flywheel?
12v electrical system?
Foot-actuated starter or electric-solenoid actuated starter?
The above information will help people provide apprpriate answers.
Yes, it it is very likely that NAPA and many other vndors will have a bolt-in starter.

At this time I have to assume that the Clutch, Bellhousing and Flywheel are also 1954 as I know the Transmission and torque tube driveline is. The starter that broke was a 6 volt as the solenoid on the starter was.[ The floor plunger switch was abandoned ]
I got this truck as a partially assembled project[ basket case ]The truck is now wired as a 12 volt with a one wire GM alternator. While starting it the engine backfired and broke the starter drive gear and the nose of the starter. I am hoping to replace this with a genuine 12 volt gm starter that will bolt in.
I can hope can't I ??

If the old starter was 6v, and the flywheel is the original 1954 flywheel, then a 12v starter will not have the appropriate "drive" gear.
Do you intend to use a 12v starter with a 12v solenoid? If so, you should use a flywheel from a 12v 235/261 engine.

The 139 is the standard 6V arrangement and the 168 is 12V. Both have a corresponding starter drive gear. A 6V starter will live forever even when run on 12V. What won't work as well is a 6V solenoid on 12V. The advice I was given was that although it will last, it will hit the flywheel too hard and be too hard on the flywheel teeth. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 5,337 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 5,337 | With minor modification to the mounting the 1955-56 12 volt solenoid will fit the 1949-54 6 volt starter.
