It ran superfine. - I come back a few minutes later, it would not start... Nothing. Nada. Zip... - I had no lights too. I figured it was the battery, so I replaced it. Nothing. - I take booster cables and jump the starter (positive on starter - negative on frame). It starts! er... I may have answered my question writting this: a short on the positive cable? (The battery is NOT clamped down in its box, it kinda moves around, I'm ashamed to say...). I'll replace that cable in the morning but could there be anything else? | | |

It starts, although it doesnt spin with enthousiasm. This got me thinking about the size of the replacement GROUND cable that was installed after my 'voltage regulator' fallout. It's small. Less than half an inch. Too small for a 6 volt system? | | |

I'd suggest going to the heaviest cables availiabe, I believe they're #1 or #2 wire size, on hot and ground, and be sure the connections are clean and tight. Wire-brush the battery posts thoroughly before installing the cables, and be sure the frame or engine where the ground cable installs is brushed bright and shiny. Once you've got everything bolted up solidly, coat the outside of all the connections, battery terminals, etc., with Vaseline to retard corrosion. Jerry

#90804 07/01/2004 5:04 AM | Joined: Aug 2002 Posts: 117 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2002 Posts: 117 | If your jumping a 12 volt to a 6 volt watch out,,I did that with my S-10 to a 53 Chev car once,and the Cables(where the plastic handles are)started melting),,Also on the VCCA website,they said Disconnect the Negative connection(I think on the block)when jumping...Or it will burn out parts on your 6-volt,,You can check over to VCCA website,,I'm sure its over there someplace,,,,Just a word to the wise....  | | |

Hook the positive starter feed up to the 12 volt system. Take the ground from the 12v system and clamp it on a remote part of the frame or bumper. Then start the truck and immediately remove the 12v connection. This is a 2 person job working in close coordination.
I think the theory here is that there is a voltage drop across the poor ground connection. I would suggest not running the 12 v engine while this is going on. | | |

I fabricated myself some new cables out of #1 cable, heavy duty battery connectors and soldered copper eyelets. The starter spins freely and the truck starts like a champ!
