there is a 1/4" plug right beside the lower oil line on my 62 261. what is this for.

You might want to post a photo of that plug/hole, to make sure we know what is being referred to.

If the plug almost fills the oil line opening, a full-flow filter has never been installed. That plug is supposed to be pushed aside when the full flow filter is used. After the plug has been moved aside, it is imperative that a full-flow filter be used, or a jumper line should be placed between the two oil filter ports on the block.

I do not know if a bypass filter can safely/effectively be used when the plug is visible (has not yet been moved aside).

Wait to hear from others for a confirmation or correction.

looking at the link you posted the left oil line has a plug right beside it about 3/8 of an inch away to the left. not the pin that is pushed in or out. looks like s 1/4" pipe plug I never really noticed it when i painted the engine but it's there.

I think the 1959 261 in my old truck had that plug, however. Maybe someone who knows about that plug will reply.

your right, your block doesn't have it. wonder what it is. maybe a place for a oil pressure line.

Again, he wants to know what is suppose to go in the plugged area. I think it is for the oil pressure gauge.
Can someone with a 1958-63 261 confirm this.

wow. finally with the help of my wife i did it. now, does anyone know what this is.

I just looked at my 1960 261 block on the engine stand and it has that same boss area but it is not drilled. I can see though that it connects to the same oil gallery as the adjacent hole for the full flow filter. I would presume it was for an oil pressure gauge line.

after spinning the oil pump with a drill there was no oil coming from this hole. I can push a wire down it till it hits the oil pan but now oil comes out. think i'll plug it back and after i start the engine i'll loosen the plug to see if oil seeps out.

If I.m not mistaken, the 1/4" tapped hole is where filtered oil from the partial oil filter system dumps back into the crankcase.

That makes a little more since. I never thought of that. Thanks.

His is a 1962 block with a full pressure oil system, not partial.
