I have a 49 Pickup and I'm looking for Shop Repair Manuals. I have a new "48-53 Truck Shop Manual and a 47-54 Assembly Manual" but I would like a more detailed repair manual like a Chilton or similar. Used or copies would be OK. Any ideas where I can get any?

The books that you have have more detail than a generic manual will have.

I agree with don. what question do you have that isn't answered in the two manuals you have? Motors put out manuals with the same info, but in a slightly different format. if you think about it the assemblt manual wit tell you almost down to the bolt how to assemble a subassembly.I see you are new to the Stovebolt. Are you new to these old trucks as well? You have got to study the info in the books you have. Also do a search on a subject you are interested in here on the Stovebolt page and you you will find a wealth of info on the question you have. Please not the search function is a rather clunky interface so you may have to sift the reselts to find what you want.

Thanks Don and Jimmie D. I am new to Stovebolt and new to old trucks. I bought my 49 truck a year ago and drive it daily in the good weather. I also had a 53 Chevy Belair in high school which I still have. There is really no questions I have now, but I will in the future. I just wanted as much reference material as I can. I will use the site for questions.

You have the two most important manuals. Here are some more online sources of info:

GM data about your '49
> Keith Hardy
> GM Heritage Center

> Keith Hardy's Old Online Chevy Manuals
Look for manuals on Keith's site about specific topics on cars and trucks that are near the age of your truck. Also look at the year specific section. Most of the information is scanned from GM manuals and bulletins.

Finally, look at the Tech Tips section of Stovebolt, and also do a search on Stovebolt - I am amazed at how much knowledge exists in our forum members.

If you still need info, we can direct you toward other sites that have specific GM manuals about the topic.

Enjoy your '49

I like to consult a Motors Manual as well as the 2 mentioned. The factory shop manual was written by tech writers, the Motors Manuals were written by mechanics. They are not a "generic" manual. They are very specific and have lots of good info on engines, trannies and other components.

Look for one from the early '50s on Ebay.

In the links section:

links section

There is a list of books & pamphlets for various areas and eras of trucks:

publications & literature

I myself have a motors manual that covers my 1965 C10.

Motors truck repair - 29th edition

I'm not sure which one covers your truck, but I'm sure you can find out. They are handy to have.

One day in the Tech Tips section there will be a guide to the manuals for the AD(1947-1955) trucks. It has been written by one of our AD truck experts, it just has not yet been formatted and published.
