I have read quite a bit that if you swap over to disc brakes you would need to put in a new MC. Why is that?

A disc drum combo requires a dual master cylinder & proportioning valve for proper brake bias

And if you have disc and disc you still want a dual circuit MC for the added safety. You also want a MC with the required fluid volume/bore that suits your new calipers.
If you swap the brakes front and rear from another vehicle you can't go wrong using the MC from that same vehicle.

If you use the current MC and add a proportioning valve and residual valves to each line feeding the front and rear brakes, wouldn't that do what was needed to operate the brakes correctly?
