I have removed every shred of wiring from my 57 with no effort to draw a diagram as I went. Which of the many wiring companies makes a good color-coded harness with good instructions ?

Have you looked through old postings in this forum? This topic has been covered several times in the last 3-4 months (lots of opinions and names of sources).

It depends on if you want stock (or close to stock/original) wiring, or if you want wiring for a wide variety of modern accessories (like A/C, electronic gauges, etc).

Classic Truck Parts and Chevy Duty have a variety of harnesses. The Chevy Duty "standard" harness is inexpensive, color coded, and quite well-made.

i bought PAINLESS WIRING for my truck, and new wiring from CCI for my '57.

the '57 was much easier to re-wire...wire for wire.

my '56 is a hybrid, half truck/half '77 camaro, with camaro main harness/steering column.

even with my career as a Verizon phone guy, wiring this truck doesn't seem to be a picnic.(i'm having to rely a lot, on my experience.)

MY ADVICE: make large, readable prints of your truck's wiring diagram, and study them and the wiring instructions over, and over, and over, and over.

too bad you removed the original wiring; then it would've been one-for-one replacement.

Iorderd one from carter for my 42.I went with the original replacement cloth covered.Very spendy but came very well marked and high quality.Chevy duty has pvc coated harneses reasonable.I may go with them for my 51.

Thanks for the pointers, guys. There was no sense in un-wiring it carefully, because it had been modified, re-wired in pieces, and generally messed up. A few strategic bites with the side cutters helped immensely. I noticed Chevy Duty's harness is pretty reasonable, but I will search this forum for more recommendations

I used an American Autowire harness and while all the wires were labled, it still was a custom rewire and not an easy job. I did learn one very important thing though: you cannot go wrong by running a seperate ground wire to every item that needs to be grounded to complete the circuit. Don't rely on a ground through attachment of the part to the body.

I used a 12 circuit harness from Kwik Wire . It is all color coded with very good instructions.
