| | | | | Joined: Jul 2012 Posts: 93 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jul 2012 Posts: 93 | Picture is not crystal clear but the rearmost gaggle of fittings/lines appears to be where one of the full flow oil 261 fittings would be, (never seen one plumbed that way)and lower on the block just behind the side motor mount triangle of holes appears to have some sort of fittings(?) that are not connected to anything--that is where the other full pressure 261 fitting would be. Maybe it is a 261. I would also look just above the starter area and on the same side of the block behind the manifolds (just below the deck surface-and mid block) for "captain's bars (manifolds are blocking this area from view). to help seal the deal. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | Wouldn't the rearward oil line port on a 235 and 261 be in generally the same location?
The only certain way to tell what you have is to post the block casting code and the block casting date.
| | | | | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 5,337 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 5,337 | All 235's have 1/8" pipe fitting connections on the block. 1954-57 261 also have 1/8" fittings, but in 1958 when the full flow filter was added the fitting size increased to 1/2", There should also be a pin ahead of the supply port which was to control the oil flow depending on whether a filter was used or not. His engine pic does not have the control pin.

There is no access from the inside either.

My Blog | | | | | Joined: Jul 2012 Posts: 93 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jul 2012 Posts: 93 | I have in the past, had a '59 and a '62 261, and both had the plug pushed in, forcing the use of a filter or a big hunk of expensive brass that just dont work neatly. On the second one, I used something similar to a power steering hose setup, it too worked, but it was very bulky and really a pain to snake the exhaust past all the oil plumbing. On the first 261 (this was in 1962) I used a brand new genuine full flow chevy filter and hoses. but when the next 261 came around ('bout 1974), these filter assemblies were not so easy to find, so I used a bypass and no filter. I had a '54 vette intake and exhaust so the filter housing would not attach well to the more square vette intake manifold (besides it would ruin the looks of the three carb setup). With the huge diameter hose the motor would not pressure up immediately, sometimes taking 10-20 seconds to get oil pressure while the hose would "fill up", some times you could hear (or imagine to hear) a main rumbling. scary--this is why I wished you could pull out that pressed in gallery plug. Folks told me it was impossible to pull it back out. (for sure once the motor was in the car) | | |
