Not sure how to describe it but my '51 (216/6v) is becoming increasingly more difficult to start.

It seems like the battery is almost completely dead when I step on the starter. The motor barely turns over. Then, all of a sudden it spins like normal and fires right up. This happens cold or hot and the battery checks out 100% perfect.

I'm thinking the starter is the issue but I figured I'd get some more seasoned opinions.

Thoughts?

First thing I would check are your battery connections, especially the grounds for a solid connection. My ground is hooked directly to the lower starter mounting bolt. And of course with a 6V heavy gauge cables are a must. Starters aren't cheap so maybe a bolter in your area can give you a lead on somewhere to get it checked out/rebuilt. Bearing/bushings could be worn causing armature to drag, brushes could need replacement.

All my grounds are good. Rewired the entire truck over the summer and made sure of it.

The starter is +/-60yrs old and has never been rebuilt to my knowledge. I do have another on a running spare motor/trans sitting in my garage. Maybe I'll swap em out and see what happens.

I would just swap it out, would not take long
and you would find out quick, if so then
have the old one rebuilt if you want to keep them both

More than likely, all the starter will need is brushes and brush springs, and the commutator cleaned up
