Mine has a big resister and has worked for years this way. Runtz is another option, its a vltage reducer. But all the vendors carry the same gauges, which is counter parts brand. So far I have had two temp gauges, one didn't work period, the second had a bourdon tube so big it hit the reflector inside the gauge panel, and made the needle stick straight up. The oil pressure gauge had a leak at the bourdon tube. So 3 of the 4 were useless, and I am not sure of the second oil pressure gauge yet. They work fine and are available at all the parts stores or your local junk yard. Just got one from Pull-a-Part for $2.00.
