Some good information on the previous post about the starter so I went over all my connections and made sure they were clean and tight. Didn't help the probem!
The starter on my 46 2 ton, with a 235, turns over rapidly when cold and the engine fires up after about 5 turns. When the engine gets hot (starter too?) and you want a restart the starter 'drags'. I had it rebuilt and a new battery but no improvement! Today in conversing with a couple of old boys one told me that those original starters had 'two fields'. He said when converted to 'four fields' the problem is solved!
Has anyone experienced this or have any knowledge of 'fields'? Thanks Geo.

I should have included the fact that after sitting about 40 minutes (at least in this weather of about 30f) to cool down a bit it will start. It will start instantly from a push of about 20ft. when you let out the clutch in 3rd gear while it is still hot!

I have never seen a four pole starter motor used on an american car/truck. Four pole motors are used on heavy equipment and large trucks. Olds stuffed one of these in their ill fated desiel car but thats it. Your problem is most likely warpage due to heat. Check with a speed shop for insulating covers and shields.

There were four field coils available. I have one. You should also know that the starter bolt pattern is common to other vehicles. I am using one off of a jd tractor.

I'll try the heat shield route and if no improvement go for the jd. Lots of old tractors around this neck of the woods.

This morning I went to the 'speedshop' and found a heat shield for my starter. I had to remove the starter to get the shield on. (it just wraps around the starter and is made of fibreglass cloth) It just snowed a bit and is too sloppy to drive the truck around but I got the temp up to 180 and then tried some starts. No problem! It spins over rapidly and the engine fires up just like it does when it's cold. I'm pretty sure that dragging problem is solved for now. Those shields are not cheap but if they do the job that's OK. Thanks again. George

I didn't find the thread where you discussed this earlier, but do you have a ground strap from the engine back to the frame and/or battery?

Thanks FredT. I value what you have to say on here. The previous question was by '**** ' about 6 down from this one. Yes, I went over all those connections and cleaned and tightened them down well. There is a good cable from the engine to the frame. I did that before installing that heat shield without any improvement. So far that starter is doing a good job now when you want to restart right away after a shutdown. I was reluctant to go to a gas station before as I didn't want to block the pumps! Regards, George
