another stupid 12v conversion question: Is my 6v ammeter going to be ok with 12v single wire alternator conversion? I assume the single wire goes directly to ammeter, then to bat.

No such thing as a dump question. Your actually very wise to ask before hand.

All of the high amperage Alternator conversions I've been installing come with an extra by-pass wire to divert some of the alternator current directly back to the battery and not through the ammeter. I would also be wise to purchase (2) fusable links "two wire size small then the wire your protecting" to install on the BAT terminal on the alternator and the other end crimped onto the wires going to the ammeter and the battery. If their is a problem the fusiable link melts and not the entire wire which will save you a lot of wiring repair time.

Your stock ammeter should be just fine. Current is current. All an ammeter does is measure the current to or from the battery.

I'm running a Delco 10si (63 amp) alternator in my truck through the stock ammeter and it works great. It has never even deflected all the way, even with a low battery. If you go to anything bigger than a 85 amp alternator you may want to do something with the gauge though.
