have just got to a stage where I have backed truck out of the garage for the first time
Experienced severe Chatter on starting - have inspected flywheel an noticed area gouged out on the rear edge ( foot starter has been sounding strage at times too)
Does the starter motor engage the flywheel fron the front or the rear?
Also whats the best way to diagnos/solve the clutch chatter

As far as the "chatter" goes, there may be rust on the flywheel and/or the pressure plate, or both, plus there may be particles of rust embeded in the clutch disc. Bad mounts can cause clutch chatter.

Rear motor mount are new (front old)
If Starter engages from front - what would cause gouge on rear of flywheel - the teeth are literaly bured off about 1/8th of an inch?

A ring gear is a shrink fit on the flywheel, and it can be driven off carefully with a mallet and a brass punch, heated to expand the diameter, and reinstalled with the "good" side facing the starter drive teeth. It was a pretty common "shade tree" fix for guys with a little ingeneuity and a tight budget!

I've always thought of the backside of the flywheel being the engine/crankshaft side, and the front being the clutch pressure plate side.
