Can anyone offer an opinion as to the value of a 1950 Chevrolet 3100? This truck is a "recent barn find", or so the present owner states. The truck looks to be just that. It is in original condition including the original wood bed, 6-cylinder engine, split fron windshield, body paint (dark green), all the way down to the rusty hubcaps. It is advertised to "Start/Run/Stop". I am curious as to how your value might compare to the advertised price the owner is asking for the truck. Thanks for your valued input.

The price is what ever you're willing to pay foe whatever it is and the condition it is currently in.

I bought mine for around $4k. It was located about 10-15 min from my house and had a current registration. I drove it home. Drove it around for a couple weeks then the clutch went out and I started noticing bondo everywhere.
No biggie, I might have offered less had I noticed but it's all part of the restoration game. Just another step in the process.

If you click the link in my signature to my blog and go back to the first post, I have everything documented down to the craigslist ad and my initial inquiry. You can see the condition of the truck when I first got it.

DADS50,

By your response I presume you mean the guy that is selling the 1950 Chevy 3100. If that is what you meant, then what would say would be a fair asking price?

A barn find truck in that condition would probably not sell for even half that amount. The exception would be something with extremely low mileage and complete history.

Old Cars Weekly sells a magazine with almost all vehicle values rated as per condition. It is usually on the news stand.

I have to agree with Truckernix, If the paint is presentable and everything works. Mice can do a lot of damage and the dust from their droppings can kill you. For that price I would expect paint that would clean up, very little if any rust and decent tires, and turn the key and go. A lot depends on what you want to end up with. Do you want a frame off with white wall tires or do you want a decent presentable driver that you can take out and have fun with. and most important how much do you want to invest in time and money to have that fun. PS. I never remember as a kid seeing ANY truck with White wall tires on it, so being a stock kinda guy I am not a white wall tire fan. Bill in Illinois

Checked out this site. Pretty intersting. I found, reading some of the other posts, that I was right where I should be (I've seen this truck and you guys haven't)when I offered the seller $3000.00. I was willing to go $4000.00, tops. He said he paid more than that for the truck, so I asked him what he would take and and he came back with $9500.00 I said no, thanked him, wished him luck, and left. Still going to try and upload some photos tonight so you can agree or disagree with me.

Check out the reply I just posted. I think I was in the "reasonable" ball park with an offer of $3000.00.

WPauley,

Should have answered your other comments. First of all I thought I might get my hands on a driveable Stovebolt. I have a 1958 Apache 1/2 ton stepside I bought in 1986. I now have some opportunities to move forward with the frame-off restoration I am doing. In the meantime, I would have a truck, with a little clean-up, that could be driven to some local shows and stir a little conversation perhaps. If and when I might decide to sell it, after the '58 is on the road, I felt I could at least get my initial investment back.

So the very in your face reply to the statement "I paid more for it" is, that is your problem not mine. That is a rude quote from Pawn Stars and I could actually not say that to someone!

I hope you find the truck that you are looking for as it sounds like a good plan. The one caution is that after owning and driving an AD truck, you might loose all desire for the 58! Now, I am not biased at all.

I don't take your bias personal and am genuinely excited when i get some time to work on the '58. Hope to be soda blasting the chassis and getting that complete before too long. had plans to powder coat that, but decided to go with the standard chassis paint in case the paint was to get scratched or chipped. I'd have a tough time repairing the powder coat. Yeah, I'll keep and eye on the truck and see how long it sits on this guy's lot. Check back later for some pictures. Sorry I wasn't able to make them available before this thread got going, but I do appreciate everyone's input.

If the truck was super clean, no rust and less than 80,000 miles, all original and a half ton, and 5 window, and a little special ( chrome grille, etc) I would think $6500 would be pretty fair, maybe even $7500.

An unrestored gem (original paint) is generally worth more than a restoration. Besides consider the cost of rust repair and paint ($1500 if you do it yourself), a transmission and engine rebuild, say two grand, and just about any good solid truck is worth three grand.

Just my two cents.

P.S. don't forget about proximity, it costs $800 to $1200 to have a truck shipped

Thanks for your two centsworth. I still believe my offer of 3000.00 was a reasonable one. Although you have not seen any pictures of this truck, based on what others have said, I don't believe that 4000.00 would have been unreasonable, but it would have been my "walk number".

You are learning. Be patient and the right truck will come along at the right price.

Your offer was fair, based on recent experience, assuming typical condition, and without seeing the truck.
"Runs and drives" is a real plus, since it makes the purchase less of a gamble than "RWIPI or "dont know". But unless it is in exceptionally rust-free shape, its not THAT much of a plus.

Already am the proud owner of a 1958 Apache 3100 stepside that is in the throws of a frame-off restoration. This was just an opportunity to have a driveable truck and my next project.

Haha. Got plenty of photos now. You might want to delete the multiple posts. Getting back to value. I think your $3000 could have been bumped to $3500 and tops,$4000, as you suggest. It appears the driver side floor has a homemade floor pan welded in. That's a clue for major rust damage. It would be to your benefit to look under the truck carefully. The price the seller wants is way out of line, but he's allowed to ask what he wants and he might just get it from someone. I would keep searching.

That truck looks like its been Wet,Damp, for some time, It does not look to be stored inside, Just by looking at the hub caps, and the wood in the bed tells you something.I would be worried about more Rust that you can't see.

Raleigh58,

I happened by the dealer selling the '50 1/2 ton you were looking at today. I was driving my '51 burb, I talked to guy for a while (nice guy) and even drove the truck on capitol blvd. Things got very funky above 40 miles an hour. Steering is loose, and probably has a bad shock or broken spring in a tie rod end. Engine runs well although the Rochester carb (a holly rebuild by the sticker) leaks. Tranny seems OK. Brakes seem OK. Tires need replacing, The paint is not original, the dash has been painted with a brush, the speedometer is not working, neither is the amp gauge.

Rear bumper is bashed in, some rust in the floor in the usual places, but not much. Doors seem good.

You know, it would be a reasonable deal for $3,000. No way where I sit for $9,500. But somebody might bite. Lot of folks with money here in Raleigh.

I think he is really thinking about keeping it for himself. It sure is an attention getter though, He had three people stop to look at it while I was there.

The rusty hub caps have been replaced with shiny new ones, by the way.

Hey Kurt,

I think he's out to lunch but I think you'd agree that the market is way out of whack here in raleigh. Too many mike leith "wannabes" and ironically some people will pay for it. I can't remember the last time I saw a clean all original used car/truck here locally.
